Jersey City, NJ – April 23, 2014 – Jersey City Public Schools, in conjunction with Superintendent Dr. Marcia Lyles, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, and State Commissioner of Education David Hespe today announced the launch of the Jersey City Leadership Institute (“JCLI”), an innovative, multi-faceted development program to enhance leadership skills of Principals, Assistant Principals and other administrators across Jersey City’s Public Schools. Better Education Institute, a non-profit organization focused on effective education programs in high poverty communities across New Jersey and founded by philanthropists David Tepper and Alan Fournier, is acting as the lead financial sponsor of the program and has committed more than $3 million to JCLI to date.
Created to build a pipeline of high-quality Principals and Assistant Principals for the Jersey City Public Schools, JCLI will train the next generation of transformational leaders to improve the academic outcomes for Jersey City’s 30,000 students and help inspire teachers and staff while creating schools of excellence. A center-piece of the Institute’s program is the Principal Residency Program, which will provide five aspiring Principals with the opportunity for a year-long, full-time paid residency, and an apprenticeship program designed to develop and credential seven to eight Assistant Principals per year.
JCLI utilizes a research-based model that draws on the key lessons learned from the best district-run leadership programs from around the country. JCLI’s program instills clear, high standards for leadership, establishes a rigorous credentialing program that integrates theory and practice, offers a full-time residency component to prepare new principals and provides ongoing support throughout the career of the school leader.
Superintendent Marcia Lyles, stated, “This is a very exciting day for the Jersey City public school system and the State of New Jersey. The Jersey City Leadership Institute will develop the next generation of administrators by providing them with the necessary skills and training they need to ensure our children learn in school and excel in life.”
Lyles continued, “JCLI recognizes that strong leaders need rigorous development programs at different stages of their careers and that ongoing professional development is essential to sustaining their growth and effectiveness. We are grateful for the generosity and multi-year support from David Tepper and Alan Fournier, who share our vision and we couldn’t be more thrilled to get this ambitious and much needed program running.”
Jersey City Mayor, Steven Fulop, stated, “It all starts with leadership. For Jersey City to have renowned schools, we need to have transformational leaders in every school. This comprehensive program will ensure that our schools have Principals and Assistant Principals continuously seeking to grow and develop as leaders. In time, JCLI will not only serve as a model for our state, but for our country as well.”
State Commissioner of Education David Hespe said, “We know that school leadership is a critical component to creating great schools, and I’m glad to see that Jersey City is taking this step to provide its leaders with high quality training.”
David Tepper, Founder of the Better Education Institute, said: “It is critical for our future that children and families everywhere have access to a first-rate education. We are thrilled to be supporting such an important initiative in Jersey City that will significantly enhance the quality of educational leadership that is so desperately needed in our schools today. We are grateful for the support of Superintendent Lyles, Mayor Fulop and Commissioner Hespe, who are taking decisive steps to improve the education and quality of life of Jersey City students and residents.”
